AICL 2010 FAQ
How do I get to campus?
See Warren Wilson’s direction’s webpage: http://www.warren-wilson.edu/admission/visit/directions.php for directions to the campus itself.
Where do I go when we get to campus? What dorms is AICL using?
AICL will be staying in the Ballfield Residence Halls on the Northwestern edge of campus. These are not the easiest dorms to find. Please see the Warren Wilson campus map for directions at http://www.warren-wilson.edu/info/campus_map.php—for details. We will also have signs up on registration day.
When should we arrive?
Families of residential campers should arrive at 3:00pm on Sunday (July 18th for session one campers, July 25th for session two campers). Between 3:00-4:00pm, campers can move into their rooms. Families of day campers should arrive at 4:00 on each Sunday. At 4:00pm, there will be a welcome and orientation for all campers and families, including mixer activities and information. At 5:00, we'll say good-bye to day campers and all families as residential campers go in for supper.
When should we pick our kids up?
Saturday morning (July 24th for session one campers, July 31 for session two campers), will feature the presentation of certificates and also performances. Please show up at 9:00am to see all the festivities! Campers will have their bags packed already, so everyone can say farewell, leaving the campus by noon on that day.
What does AICL need for each camper before camp starts?
Registration form, full payment by July 5th, completed medical form.
What should a camper bring?
To bring: Pillow, sleeping bag or sheets for a twin bed, clothes for a week, bathing suit and towel, toiletries, two comfy pairs of shoes (if one gets wet), sweater, raincoat, flashlight, almost no pocket money, prescription medication with dosage guidelines. Optional: Fan (dorm rooms are not air-conditioned), snacks (though we will provide PLENTY of food), outfit for disco, sunscreen, bug spray.
Is there anything my child shouldn’t bring?
Unnecessary valuables, weapons, pets, stowaway siblings without parents’ permission.
May my children bring cell phones?
In this age of constant connection, AICL promotes summer camp as a time to be fully present to the activities at hand. In our experience, we've seen how checking in too often with home hampers enjoyment of camp; we've also seen cell-phones become objects of mischief or worry when they're lost. Our strong preference is that campers not bring cell-phones, and instead make any calls from the office. That said, our role is to support parents in their parenting. So, if it makes sense to your family for your child to have a cell-phone, and you know that AICL isn't liable for its loss or mis-use, your camper is allowed to bring one.
May I drop by and visit my child during the week?
Mid-week visits by parents can be supportive or detrimental to the camper's full, present experience at camp. To maintain a safe environment, we can't allow any unannounced visits from anyone; but by prior arrangement with the Director, and if parents think it is helpful and not detrimental to the camper's experience, parents may make brief mid-week visits.
Are the dorms air conditioned?
No, but there are ceiling fans in the dorm rooms.
Where do the counselors sleep?
The campers are divided into same-sex, counselor groups. The group members sleep in adjacent rooms. Almost every camper will have a roommate. Counselors stay in rooms near their campers. Girls and boys stay on different floors if not in different buildings.
How do I contact AICL during camp?
Call 1 (800) 951-7442 or email info@appalachianinstitute.org. We’ll be happy to let you know how your camper is doing and to answer any questions you have.
